Summer of Interruptions

Typically, if you know me then you would know I am a planner, an organizer by trade, and when things don’t go as planned, I am easily overwhelmed by the interruption. At times I even run away from the interruption and stick to my plan. This summer was the epitome of interruption and spontaneity. From college classes to church camp, from church camp to spending time with my sister in Navasota, from there to a church camp I was not planning to go to. Back to my church for kids Vacation Bible School. From there back to Navasota to spend more time with my sister, to a few of us buying chickens for a youth pastor that we knew would not want them. To water gun fights and remodeling the third floor. To Sam Houston State University and then back to Crosby. Then to Oklahoma to put on another Vacation Bible School for kids. Although it seemed at times as if this summer was never going to end; it was the most exciting and fun filled summer I have ever experienced. As an incoming senior in high school I wanted to pack this summer with friends from school and church camp, and serving others. Of course, God had different plans, but throughout this summer I truly got to experience God in a different way than I have ever experienced him before. In all of the interruptions I saw God, and I started to see a change in myself in response to the interruptions.

The World of Interruptions

How do you feel about interruptions? Many of us think of interruptions with a negative connotation, because that’s how the world has brainwashed us. Society has made many of us think that anything that comes against you, or anything that may seem like interruptions are things that are pulling you away from success. That brings us to the question of what is success in your mind/life? Are you personally allowing God to define success in your life or the world? Success is defined by Christ alone and once we understand that than we will start to accept every interruption and start seeing them as blessings. Throughout this summer God allowed me to see the many interruptions through his eyes. Seeing the beauty in the interruptions no matter how far away from the plan they are is so much more rewarding then sticking to the plan and missing out on what God has in store for you.

Jesus in Interruptions

Throughout the bible Jesus’ life was bombarded continually with interruptions. In Luke 7:11- 17 :

11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

it talks about when Jesus raised a widow’s son from death to life. The scriptures says that “they were all filled with awe, and they praised God” v.16. This parable shows us that even though Jesus was not in a way expecting the interruption, his response was always very compassionate and he was always willing to show people God’s love and healing power. This also show us that we may fear interruptions but they are needed at times so that we can worship and praise God like never before. What will your response be to any interruption in your life? The devil will always try to steal the joy and the thought of security in your life, but you have to be ready to combat the devil. Stay strong and know that every time there is an interruption in your life it may be God showing you that you need to get out of your routine, or your comfort zone and start living life the way Jesus did.

Many of us say that we are Christians and are trying to walk daily to be like Christ, but Jesus had interruptions in his life and he never complained, he was always accepting with every interruption. Will you be like Christ and see every interruption as a beautiful blessing?
