This Thanksgiving break my family and I cruised on the Carnival Freedom to Key West and two ports in the Bahamas: Freeport and Nassau. Whilst I could give details of the entirety of the trip, there is one moment I experienced that I feel is truly worth sharing. When the ship ported in Nassau, Bahamas my mother and I were convinced that a taxi tour would be a good way to explore the culture of the island.
We were accompanied by five additional cruise tourists, and of course our driver, who was actually native to the Turks and Caicos Islands. As we ventured onward, we discovered the different parts of the island: from the beautiful buildings in Parliament to the people retrieving water from public wells in poverty.
Our driver, Mr. Hall, edged along to a beach where we were encouraged to “get some sand between our toes,” as he put it. The scene was breathtaking to view. Mom and I walked along the beach when Mr. Hall strolled there beside us and gifted us each with seashells he had uncovered on his own time roaming the shore. As we were loading back up into the taxi, Mr. Hall pulled me aside and asked “Do you know the Lord?” The question took me by surprise and I answered pleasantly, “Yes I do.”
I wanted to share this story because it revealed something to me. While I was on a family vacation, Mr. Hall was using his job as a simple taxi driver to pour the love of God into the hearts of people. This is what my life should be like…all of the time…not just when it is convenient. If Mr. Hall can use a taxi service to share Jesus’ profound love, what is it that I’m doing?
John 13:34-35
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
